Mark in - mark out, select area

For hours each day I need to select an area of an audio clip (and do further work that is too much to describe here).

The way I do that:
I listen to the audio and press arrow down at the start point, and arrow up at the end point. Or select the area with the mouse.

If I for some reason miss the out point, I have to find exactly where I want to end my selection.

But then I have lost my in point...

Is there a way to set "permanent" in- and out points, and then make selection between them?

A way could be to use two permanent markers for in and out, and drag the markers with me through the project.

But is there a function for this?

You can separate timeline and edit selection and use the key commands O and 0 (cmd focus mode) to copy from one to the other. Then use arrows to select edit region and copy up to timeline, once you find the appropriate ending point copy it back down from the timeline and hold shift before clicking the right edge of the selected edit selection (inside the grey).

Tab to transient may also be handy with the shift key (select up to next transient). Also you can adjust edit selection end by nudge value with shft cmd num pad +/- (start is sft opt nm pad +/- ). You can increase or decrease nudge value with opt+cmd +/-.

Or if you select the scrubber tool after making the selection and hold shift and click inside the grey to edit the endpoint while scrubbing.

Permanent markers, I do not know ... but maybe new ones :
playback, hear in-point : quickly enter enter (numeric keypad) to create a memory location #1
hear the out-point : quickly enter enter , memory location #2
stop playback
memory locations window : select #1 , shift-select #2 , makes a selection
possibly : alt - , to correct the start point at little bit earlier , ctrl - , to correct the out-point a little bit earlier (due to human reaction time for listening/realizing/hitting enter enter)
when done : alt-click mem loc #1 and #2 for clean-up

There is a setting in Preferences to allow one "Enter" to drop in a Marker when Playing or Recording.

Don't forget that there are one-key shortcuts for "Play Up To In Point", "Play from In Point", "Play Up To Out Point", and "Play From Out Point" - these can be very handy for refining your start and end times.

Another option; drop a marker at the front and another at the end. Select the front marker, hold SHIFT and select the end marker. To make that a "permanent" selection(while its highlighted), hit Enter as if you were going to drop a marker, but go on the Marker Properties box, uncheck Marker and check Selection and hit Okay. Now when you select that marker from the list, it will select that same portion of the timeline and audio
