Default How Much RAM?

I am in the process of setting up my MacPro for PT11, HDX, AAX and want to optimize RAM. I presently have 8GB. Now is the time to install it but don'w want to over do it if it is not going to do me any good.

You will only benefit from massive amounts of RAM if you:

1) use lots of virtual instruments
2) have HD and want to use the Disk Cache

Other than that, for simple audio recording and processing, Protools does not really require very much RAM.

Default Re: How Much RAM?

I was fairly comfortable at 12 GB with V10.
Now into V11
As noted above, using VI and or secondary apps also in 64bit (VI samplers) Reason ect..
I hit the top rather quickly.

So to figure out my real-needs, I watched my usage (Activity Monitor) and launched (Without Pro Tools)
(Basically all I might do with Pro Tools running)
Some samplers with large libraries and other hungry VI's to re-find my need for headroom.
24GB seems good for now and my budget.
Now I can have 4-6GB of Disk Cache, Vi's and 4-8GB of available memory.
(Not utilizing HD video)

BTW Avid recommends 16Gb for running V11
"HD—8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended)"

Thanks for the replies. I think I will go with 24 for the time being.
