Avid has responded, they want me to buy a code from a 3rd party vendor, and then email them the code. Seems strange, but I will use sweetwater and a credit card.

Tom,
Avid request the same of me several weeks ago. Cautiously, I did purchase a renewal code from Sweetwater (third Party vendor) and provided to Avid. However, that has been over 30 days ago. Nothing has changed. I still have a open ticket for resolving this issue.

Nobody alarms, if they don't get this sorted out in time we are legally entitled to an extension of the grace period.
I'm only worried because I'm about to travel overseas with no internet, if they fix this and my grace period expires while I'm out I will have to pay the penalty because it would be technically not their fault.

Start a support case.
I did a month ago and have been reassured by support that I won't incur any additional costs even though at this point my plan has lapsed. So to protect yourselves, start a support ticket and get it documented. If for some reason this doesn't pan out to be sunshine and roses, at least you have it documented you did your due diligence. One a side note, I still think it is insane that there is not a link to renew. My HD subscription has a link and I was able to renew, albeit 5 months early because I was stressing this, but I still can't believe non-HD doesn't have a link. I mean how hard is it to add a link?? Unless the underlying process is just flat out broke. The irony is that the link was there last March when I had to renew. Surprise, an update broke something.....

Vanilla PT here who can't renew (I have an open case). I am just hoping that I don't miss out on some updates that I already paid for via sweetwater in this next year due to the problem.
