Joystick S5-MC

Dear All,

The joysticks on both my System5-MCs are troublesome for me. Everytime I want to use one of them I need to use a two button combo and select 'use attentioned track' in order for me to then attention a track and pan it. After few other commands on the 5-MC, it will have forgotten about this setup and the joystick will be inactive. Everytime I want to resume working with it, I will need to select 'use attentioned track' and attention a track. The default for joysticks is to pan 'None' and obviously the default should be 'use attentionsd track' instead. Its pretty bizarre. This bug is as old as the console itself. Will it ever be fixed?

If you set it to use attention it should stay that way (I think)

No unfortunately it doesnt stay that way. Instead it loses this preference virtually after every other command I pursue on the console. Meaning, if I pan a lot on a movie I will do this 30 or 40 times a day:
- push attention+upper button next to joystick
- change preference from 'none' to 'use attentioned track'
- attention desired track and pan

What is the preference 'none' for? Why would I ever want to pan 'nothing'? It seems illogical to me. The system 5-MC is a very well made and expensive console, tbh I'm quite baffled by how poorly the joysticks are implemented.

I just tried this on our machine and it works OK. When you assign the joystick to be attention do you get the Euphonix logo in the Joystick channel display at the top of the MCPro screen ?

correct. I do get the logo!

Now switch between two layouts and the logo will be gone immediately. Btw, it turns out the default preference of the joysticks is to pan the first channel in the session. So regardless of the fact that I save the "attention" preferences with my layouts, joysticks will loose this preference every time I change layouts.
This is obviously needs a fix.

But regardless of this layout issue, the default for joysticks should be to pan attentioned track, like on virtually every other console.

If you store the attention track in all layouts this should work how you want it.

Dear Eddie,

That would be great indeed! But like I said, I store the preference with my layouts, but the joysticks always jump back to default pan the first track in the session, meaning the preference is not actually saved with the layout, it seems.

I tried this again and it works OK here. Are you definitely sure the Layouts are saving ?
