I'm pretty sure you can't. Would be a nice feature though. You could always bounce between 2 audio tracks and edit together later.

I workaround it by setting up a dummy track that's just in input monitor mode in addition to the regular track to which I'm recording. Also allows you to hear the singer talking to you during playback or any other time without having to be worrying about switching off record enable or input monitor.

Hi,

Yes you can up till you punch in!!, and you can also turn your caps-lock off

Have the track in record mode "and" input monitor, you'll hear whats recorded and the artist till you punch in then you'll hear the new recording.

You want to hear both whilst recording? you'll have to drag region to a new track and cut and mute the track where you want to drop.

Chris

Nice tip, Thanks.

Can't believe I never tried to enable record and input simultaneously.

Aloha,

Jonathan

This is my #1 complaint with PT.
After years of working with other DAWs, I became very used to being able to hear playback AND input monitoring for a given track simultaneously. It is a HUGE workflow advantage for many reasons:

1. It helps the talent get in the pocket during punch-ins. They are able to lock in with their previous performance that much easier when they can hear themselves during pre-roll.

2. This in turn, helps the engineer know when the performance is really locked in and and as result, know when to punch.

3. Communicating with the talent. I don't know how many times I've hit playback and the talent is trying to get my attention and I'm oblivious because I can't f'n hear them...ugh.

If you've never worked this way then you don't know what your missing. Once you've gotten used to that functionality it's really hard to accept working without it. You should see the look on my clients faces when I explain to them that my new $30k fancy-dancey PTHD rig can't do this after they've gotten used to my old native system.

Every other major hardware manufacture that I can think of provides some form of latency free monitor mixer that will pass audio via direct monitoring completely independently of the DAW it is fronting. Sure you can't use plugins on input-monitored tracks, but for those of us with consoles and outboard, this is really a non-issue. This is by far my preferred way to work.

Don't get me wrong, I love PTHD and it has many advantages over a native system (obviously), but I actually miss my native rig while tracking. I would LOVE to see digi implement some kind of "always on" direct monitoring scheme.
