Default Audio Dropouts??Can't Change Buffer Size!!

Hello everyone,

I'm encountering audio dropouts, playback makes random sudden clicks and pops followed by 1-2 secs of silence. I believe this has to do with low buffer size. But I have a problem with changing my buffer size with Pro Tools first! I'm using a Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 2nd Gen Audio Interface and the buffer size is set by default to 64. When I click on Setup --> Hardware I get this windowUntitled.png
Then I change the buffer size to 128 and it asks me to quit Pro Tools So I hit Quit and when I reopen, the buffersize goes back to 64!! It just won't change whatever I do. There's no option to change buffer size from Setup --> Playback Engine.

Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It's a bit difficult to troubleshoot your issue because you haven't provided much of your system details. I'm going to take a guess that you are using Windows, and one of the common mistakes is using your Focusrite interface as your default Windows interface. If this is the case, you will have to go into your Windows playback settings and tell Windows not to use your audio interface for Windows sound. After you have done this, restart the computer. After the reboot, use the Focusrite software to set the sample rate and buffer. Then launch ProTools and try setting the Playback Engine to your desired settings.

It is also advised that new users take a look at the Help Us Help You post, which contains information about system configuration, optimization and general troubleshooting. If you are still having issues, please post your system details and I'm sure someone here on the forums can help you out.

Hello Junkgear,
Thank you for your reply. Sorry for not mentioning my system details as i'm new to this forum. I have windows 10 64bit
I disabled my focusrite driver from my windows playback devices, rebooted, changed focusrite setting, opened pro tools and the buffer size still doesn't change from 64 whatever i do. I think there is a default buffer size according to the (Optimize engine for) setting found in Setup --> Playback engine. If I choose Record, The buffer size becomes 64, and if I choose Playback, Buffer size change to 512.
I notice that the problem stops when I hit record, there are no more dropouts. But when I stop recording I can't monitor my input!

That sounds like incorrect settings in the Focusrite software

It's weird because it works fine with another DAW! So I'm sure it has to do with pro tools.
