Default SATA - IDE or AHCI

Hey guys, today I changed my SATA configuration from 'IDE,, to AHCI', in hopes to be able to use the 'Hot Swap Tray -less' HDD unit without having to shut down when changeing drives. But to my surprise,,, I broke W7 (64bit)??!! (Ha Ha). Luckily with using Windows repair, and changeing (in the BIOS) back to IDE, everything is as it was. BUT, no hot swap of course...??
Is there a way to change my drives to AHCI with out getting that beautiful 'BLUE SCREEN of,,,,, 'you stupid idiot', your not supposed to do this?? Or is that set up to be done before Op sys install or something??? As always, I appreciate all of youse guys help over the years, and any comments about AHCI would be appreciated,,,,,,,,,,, THANKS,, Mike

I seem to remember a tutorial somewhere(maybe the i7 Builds thread) about how to convert, but it failed for me. The best bet is to do a fresh install of Windows 7 with that feature set in BIOS before you do the install. Its IS working on my new build, but I am having other problems that prevent me from relying on the new rig for clients

In order to change to AHCI once you already have Windows installed, you need to load the AHCI drivers first, then shutdown, and set BIOS to AHCI.

You can do this manually in Device Manager, or through Regedit.
