Default HDX Thunderbolt 3 rackmount

Has anyone tried this new thunderbolt 3 rack mount with a mac mini?

I was wondering how loud it is? Can it be in the same room, or would it be best in an isobox?

I need a new computer, and think this might be a better option than the mac pro 2019.

Just bought the desktop chassis. It’s basically as big or bigger than the rack mount.

It’s quiet, but I can see if hdx cars started reving up, it would be too loud to cut an acoustic guitar or lead vocal in the same vicinity. If you are just editing/mixing/ it’s totally doable.

I thought it would be as quiet as the trash can Mac Pro and it wasn’t. If that makes any sense.

Thanks for the info.

That makes sense. I will probably get the Mac mini instead of the pro.

They seem plenty fast and the pro is a big chunk of change.

Bump. So really no one has gone this route to replace a Cheesgrater with an HDX Thunderbolt rack and a Mac mini?

Hi Will,

I use a Mac Mini with the Sonnet 19" 3 Slot PCIe Expansion,
but not as my main rig. I either have the Dolby RMU with a Focusrite Dante card running, or I use it as my ProTools Print Rig. Its running great, stable and never let me down. In my place it is installed in the machine room, so I cannot really tell how loud it is, but I am pretty sure it would bother me sitting right next to me.

Maybe this helps,
Nico
