On the subject of fans, you were right. for one, I did indeed underestimate the bulkiness of the coolers. more importantly, supermicro uses narrow ILM while the standard is square ilm. noctua doesnt support narrow, so won't be able to use them. I'm checking now if the SNK-P0050AP4 by supermicro will do the trick.

EDIT
Found a solution, its a pair of NH-U12DX i4. will test those, see if its good.

Hopefully they will work. They seem pretty big but I think they will fit from what I can see. Just need to check the spacing before buying to be on the safe side.

On the hack bandwagon it's worth noting that so far there are no confirmed reports of anyone having turbo states working for LGA2011 processors. Fixed overclocks are fine with OSX but turbo states require the OS to up the multiplier when needed.

It's been hypothesized that the release of the nMP should provide a system definition that supports this, but I've been following it on tonymac and so far nothing under 10.9.1 (could change).

There is a single geekbench test that would suggest that somebody has it working (50k+), but I would expect that to take a lot of deep hacking of OSX (beyond the tonymac guys) to obtain. Maybe he has unlocked engineering samples (supposedly they do exist)....

Probably safer to run this as a win machine, especially for pro work, who knows how much hacking the kernel benefits us audio guys?
