Default Spare time anyone? - Which mix is better?

I know I'm asking alot here but I could sure use a second opinion... BIG TIME actually.

Please pardon the music, I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea but;

Heres the deal..... Same song, two completely different mixes - a buddy of mine (sound engineer) did one of them, I did the other..... I honestly believe his is much better (I LOVE it) yet there are some elements I really like about my mix as well;

If even one of you guys could checkout both tracks and shoot me some feedback (and/or pick your favorite mix) I would really appreciate it... hopefully you'll be running this thru some good speakers/monitors.

MIX 2:

Thankyou much.

Default Re: Spare time anyone? - Which mix is better?

I only did a very quick listen... also, there's already a thread for this stuff called "Mac Mixes!!!!" so be aware of that for next time

Mix 1: Everything sounds pretty balanced in this one for the most part, except the drums, which (to be sorta blunt) are really bad. They don't fit in the mix at all (very dry and up front) and are spread so small across the stereo spectrum (almost mono), their prominent placement in the mix really draws focus to how bad they sound. Otherwise though its a pretty good mix. The vocals could down maybe -2db during the doubled parts ("nature's got it's way of telling...") and I think I heard some light phasing on the vocal during those parts when I switch to mono - but it's balanced well otherwise.

Mix 2: Too many effects and verb overall, especially on the vocals - sometimes it works, but most of the time it's too much. The guitars (and sometimes vocals) also sound out of control dynamically at times - some weird compression - or lack thereof - going on. The drums however sound MUCH better in this version, although they're still very sample-y. Is there any room or overhead "mics" you can add at all from your drum source? If you could take the drums from Mix 2 and put them in Mix 1 I think you'd be a lot closer. This one is also mixed a lot louder, so doing a direct A/B is tough.

This is just a quick opinion, so keep that in mind.
