Pro Tools 8 Information

Pro Tools® 8 software is coming soon for Pro Tools|HD®, Pro Tools LE®, and Pro Tools M-Powered™ systems. We currently expect Pro Tools 8 to be released and available sometime in December of 2008. While we do our best to accurately predict release dates, some release delays may be experienced dependent upon final testing. For all updated Pro Tools 8 release information, please refer back to our website as the expected release date approaches.

For more information about the new features, see the following:For preliminary information on compatibility, upgrades, and updates, please see the main Compatibility & Upgrades page in the Support section under Quick Links, and at the top of the DUC:

A few notes about Pro Tools 8.

The boxed version will NOT contain a printed manual and contains the same content as the download, though the boxed version comes with an installation DVD, the download (obviously) does not.

Anyone eligible for a free upgrade - emails for those will be rolling out over the next week. Please DO NOT CALL, as calling will not change the order in which you get your amnesty email and will only create longer wait times for those who are truly in need of help.

The download size is about 4.5GB, though you will have access to additional loops and content to download separately if you are eligible.

Upgrading to Pro Tools 8

You're excited about installing and using Pro Tools 8, but before you do, please read the following carefully to assure you avoid the most common pitfalls when upgrading.

First, BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM! This cannot be stressed highly enough. Backing up your system prior to upgrading will allow you to have something to fall back to should you encounter issues. While we do extensive testing both in-house and with our beta sites, there is still a chance that we won't catch every possible bug.

Mac users - use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your OS drive to another drive before upgrading - or leave your current OS drive alone and do a fresh install of Leopard to a new drive to which you'll install Pro Tools 8. If you're on a Mac we strongly recommend doing a clean install of both Leopard and Pro Tools 8 (no previous version of Pro Tools installed) to avoid unexpected issues. Windows users - the Pro Tools 8 installer will force you to uninstall any previous version before installation.

If you're updating to 10.5.5, please use the Combo Updater available here:

Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update

Windows XP and Vista users - use either Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost to backup your drive before upgrading or, as with Mac, do a fresh install of the OS to a new drive and install Pro Tools 8 to that drive.

Before installing Pro Tools 8, please review the READ ME files. These contain information specific to upgrading to Pro Tools 8, including known issues that you need to be aware of:

The Windows downloads for Music Production Toolkit 2 and Complete Production Toolkit installers are now available, along with the Mac downloads in your My Digi account if you previously activated one of these upgrades.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.

Not included with the Pro Tools 8 installation disks or web installers, available for download only.
Linked in the Downloads sections for all Pro Tools 8 applications in the Support section:

Legacy MIDI Controllers - Pro Tools 8

Quote:
Legacy MIDI Controllers - Pro Tools 8

The following control surfaces were not tested with Pro Tools 8, and therefore are not officially supported.
  • JL Cooper CS-10™ MIDI series
  • Peavey PC-1600™
To use these files, download and place the personality file for your MIDI Controller in the following location:

On Mac OS X:
Hard Drive:/Applications/Digidesign/Pro Tools/Controllers

On Windows XP:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE\Controllers

For information on how to use these, see the following document included with the downloads:

MIDI Control Surfaces Guide
The last revision of this document (from the Pro Tools 6.1 release) is included with the controller downloads, both English and Japanese versions.

Note that in this older guide, an incorrect location was listed for installation with newer Pro Tools systems. Please use the locations on the page above.
