Default Slow start on play

I have two systems with the same problem: PT HD 8.0.0cs3 (downgraded from 8.0.1) on a Quad G5, 8 GB RAM, 10.5.8.

On play or record, PT takes about 3 or 4 seconds before starting to play. On stop, playback stops instantaneously. I fiddled around with a few settings in the playback engine, but to no avail.

There seems to be a few threads describing similar problems and I sort of noticed that the G5 was a common element in those threads: is it so?

Do you have video in your sessions? If so, try changing the Sound control panel to 'Built-In' as having it set to Digi HW can cause this playback delay.

Yup, that was it, thanks. Is this also a problem with 8.0.1? Can I safely re-update to 8.0.1?

TIA,

Daniel

Daniel
FYI: we experienced this same "video delay on play" symptom after upgrading to 8.0.3 on Snow Leopard (10.6.2).

Solution was the same (and thanks for posting that!): Go into the OS-X sound preferences, and explicitly set the output to "Built in".

Here is another cause for that. I had the same problem, cutting a 20 episode TV show on a PT LE 8.01 system (OS 10.5.7) with DV toolkit. Adding episodes as the video editor finishes them in chunks. I have all episodes in the same session, 2 videotracks. It was fine from the beginning, then PT suddenly had a 3 sec delay on play. My OS sound prefs was set to internal all the time.

I found the problem and it was one of the video files, all videos had no sound track (format was H264 1024x576 25 fps). One of the videos though, had sound (at 44.1), I did not import any audio from the videos, but that one file was slowing down the whole system (session running at 48k). I removed the soundtrack on the videofile and play delay was gone.

Thanks for that Ken, best tip i've ever had from the forum!

My video's were converted without sound option in quicktime but on inspection in quicktime pro (apple + J) there was still an audio track.
Deleted that and all was fine.

Works on PT LE also btw.
