Have perpetual license. What happens if I stop paying?
I've been a Pro Tools user now since 5.1 (2001). Between Hardware and software, I have spent Thousands. I am primarily a hobbyist and have never approached this a a money making venture. For the last few years I have grudgingly bought the annual $99 dollar update. The "goodies" offered have been enough of a salve to justify the expense. However, as I understand it the cost to maintain a perpetual license has now doubled. I'm an old guy with old computer and now a pensioner so I don't have tons of money to throw around.
So here is the question: If I do not pony up the cash to Avid when the renewal period passes, what am I left with and what disappears? Most of the extra plugins that show as being part of the avid stuff I do not use..ever. I know AVID has to pay its people but this seems like very bad business practice to an old fart like me. Thoughts and guidance please Brian Thanks

Re: Have perpetual license. What happens if I stop paying?
You'll be left with the version of Pro Tools you have when you stop paying. You'll lose whatever plugins are part of your perpetual plan. (I don't know what they are, honestly I don't use that stuff) If you decide to upgrade in the future, you either start renting, or buy a new perpetual license :'(

I paid up my last $99 which takes me through till next year unless Avid recant. There's plenty of mature DAWs out there, many of which offer Pro Tools functionality without the longstanding issues, inflexibility or expense. Take a look at something like Logic Pro X for example. You'll incur the expense of a newer Mac but find a nice second hand machine and it won't cost the earth and you certainly won't have to pay $199 yearly for the software. Stephen

We really need a FAQ section on this site.

Or, we could use that Search feature that has always been there on the menu

If you're talking about using the search function here it's not that great. Always have problems when trying to search using more than one word in the search term. For that I have to resort to using the site: operator in a Google search.

Re: Have perpetual license. What happens if I stop paying?
You pay a reinstatement price, which is more than the yearly perpetual license update fee, but less than the price of a new Pro Tools license.

However you wish to search, it is much better than a FAQ that someone needs to update and the updates are always lagging

Re: Have perpetual license. What happens if I stop paying?
I don't think he was suggesting that we have an FAQ and then manage it poorly, but he's right that more Avid-sourced and updated FAQs would add value to this forum. I've come looking for similar data but the forum wasn't always useful. However, it could be. I run a couple of forums and they include such data -- FAQ updates take very little time, and the members seem to appreciate it.
