Default Pro Tools M-Powered 8.0.4 freezing!

Hey everyone!
This is my first post on here, but I am hoping some of you may be able to help me.

Okay basically, I think it would be best to tell you my connections of what I am using:
- iMac Intel Core 2 Duo -> M-Audio ProFire 2626 -> Glyph GT 050Q (Daisy chained)
- My DAW is Pro Tools M-Powered 8.0.4.

So my problem is when I am recording it starts off really well and everything is working smooth and suddenly my whole session gets the rainbow wheel on my mac, and I am not able to do anything. This usually happens when I press the RECORD button and it stays frozen for around 40 secs or more and most of the time I am having to close down Pro Tools because it just won't work.

Then I shut my computer down and re-open and it works okay and the problem happens again after a while. This is such a frustrating problem and I never encountered this problem with Garageband.

I set my buffer size to 512 or lower when I am recording as well and everything else is set high, so I shouldn't be encountering these problems.

If any of you know why this happens, or if there is something that can stop it, please let me know!

Thanks a lot.

First ting I would try is connecting the HDD to the iMac and the Profire to the HDD. Even if it doesn't solve your problem this way you can turn the Profire off or on without getting problems with the HDD...

Thanks for your reply!
I have tried daisy chaining it the way you said but now my iMac doesn't even see the ProFire at all.

What I have done is:

The Glyph GT 050Q is now connected through FireWire 800 to the iMac
The ProFire 2626 is now connected through FireWire 400 to the Glyph GT 050Q

If I have connected is wrong, or something please let me know!
But the real problem is the one which was my main post, which should certainly not be happening.

Thanks

That sounds to me like you need a FW800 to FW400 converter cable. It doesn't matter if you connect the harddrive to the iMac with this cable and use a standard FW400 for the connection between the Profire and the harddrive, or if you connect the HDD with a FW800 and use the converter cable for the Profire... as far as i know the bus is always using the speed of the slowest component.

I have just tried and it does not work at all.

My real problem is with Pro Tools, do any of you know the reason why this happens?

try setting a record duration limit (10min or so) in the preferences.

What does changing the duration do?

I was experiancing these problems in 8.0.3, that's why I upgraded hoping it would sort it out!

And I am still running 10.5.8 but I may upgrade to 10.6.4

Unhook the external drive from the system and try recording to the internal drive to see if it helps. This will pinpoint daisy chaining or your hard drive as the culprit.

later,

Scott
