Default Can't record on Instrument channels

Microphone channels via FAst Track interface work fine. Running an electric guitar through shows the signal light on the Fast Track but, with record enabled and channel selected, the level monitor does not activate, and the channel won't record.

Either a problem with the instrument output on the interface, or I'm missing something.

Mac Mini recording studio, OSX 10.7.

Is this a hardware or software difficulty? The studio came with a lot of software packages, but I've only loaded the SE to learn it first.

Appreciate any thoughts.
