Default Logic, 001 & 2 modules

How do I communicate with 2 sound modules independently and indivually (without the one playing while the other plays) through Logic.

I am using the DIGI001.
Going IN to the JV1010.
Then thru JV 1010 to IN of KORGN1R.

I have UNITOR8 but its serial RS422, and I just crossed to a MAC. And I must say I have not yet enjoyed this MAC, since OMS since to be a wierd thing, and LOGIC is not so working with 2 sound modules independently with DIGI001 (as it of course would with UNITOR8).

I just got the G4PORT to convert the modem into a serial port, but then there goes my internet connection. I probably have to get an external modem blah blah and lose the speed. (right)...or maybe a serial modem (lose the speed more right?)

So what do I do next?
How can i configure DIGI001 to work smoothly with 2 modules?

Thanks.

HI Sha-Rone,

Everyone is always so quick to blame OMS? This appears to be not a ProTools/Logic/Mac/OMS issue at all, but a basic MIDI principle.

Both those synths can play a different sound on each of its 16 channels.

The MIDI Thru port relays everything that device has recieved.

Your set-up:

Digi001 --> JV-1010 --> N1R

Now, for example, if you create a MIDI track, select JV-1010 as its output, then say, channel 3, when you play a sequence, of course the N1R will respond as well with whatever sound it has set to channel 3.

That's because they're tuned to the same channel!

Think of every TV set in your neighbourhood tuned into the same program simultaneously. The TV station (sequencer) can't discriminate between which viewers (synths) will get to see their pictures (MIDI).

It's up to you to go into each synth and tell it to ignore the MIDI channels you wish to reserve for the other synth.

For example,

- In your JV-1080, somewhere in its menus, set it to only receive on channels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

- In your N1R, somewhere in its menus, set it to only receive on channels 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.

Done!

To keep things organised, and to restrict you to only being able to select from the MIDI channels available to each synth from your sequencer:

- Open OMS

- Double-click the icon related to each synth

- Click under 'Receive Channels' and leave a 'X' in the channels you're reserving for it (as assigned in each synth earlier on).

Lastly, if you're still having problems with synths playing in uniform, again its probably a synth set-up issue. They must be set to work with 'different sounds on different channels', and not 'one sound, one channel', or 'one sound, all channels'.

Check your synth manuals under 'working in conjunction with a sequencer'.

If you want 16 channels available for each synth, you'd better dust off that Unitor8. Again, a limitation to the MIDI protocol, not OMS, Pro Tools, Logic, or Mac.

Hope that all helps.

Phil
