Default Re: Avid Mbox vs. Apogee Duet - Mini Review

Thanks for the reply. I guess now I need to find out whether the Mbox 3 sounds appreciably better than the Mbox 3 Mini. I don't need the extra connectivity. My primary concern is the D/A.

It's probably not that much different, but even if it sounded the same, I think in the long run you'd be happier with the regular Mbox. The Mbox Mini still uses USB 1.1, and still uses the mix knob on the front for low latency tracking. Whereas the regular Mbox allow you to go down to a low buffer, and thus track with plugins if you want.

And it's only $150 more. You can get one from Guitar Center or Musicians Friend using their 15% off coupons and save some money.

I'm gonna call Avid and ask if the D/A is the same in the Mini as the regular Mbox. It's hard for me to believe that the Mbox sounds better that the Duet or Duet 2. It's very hard to test D/A convertors.

I tried a tracking session and do notice that I hear some sort of ticking/interference when I have the pre cranked all the way up to use my SM7 on soft vocals. It's something in the Mbox mini because I turned off all my other gear and made sure no cell phones were in the room.

Anyone else notice a ticking interference sound when the pre is cranked all the way up?
