Solid State Drives
Anybody using a SSD as a boot drive and/or audio drive? Curious to see if drives like OWC's are now reliable. Some of the guys in the PC LE forum have some horror stories...
I will be using OWC's as of next week on a 8/10 Mac Pro, but not with Pro Tools just yet, only with Logic, because I'm still in pre-accel pcix land... and holding out for new cards. ^_^ |

Re: Solid State Drives
SSD drives are the rage in the filmscoring world to be able to stream more than regular disk drives because they are faster.
im still not into them because of the extra expense and not THAT much difference in speed. plus they have a limited lifetime. (not that disk drives will last forever..) id rather get 10k rpm drives and host samples in several of them. for recording i still havent read much about anyone having slow disk issues. why are you interested in those drives? |

Re: Solid State Drives
My LE system runs on a SSD (system only) in a Macbook Pro. It's very nice in that setting: quiet, cool and very fast boot times. Given the lack of rotating parts, I'd also expect better durability for a portable unit. This is the first I've heard mention of a shorter lifetime for SSD. How long are they expected to last?

Re: Solid State Drives
consider the Seagate hybrid drive, also offered at OWC.
I was more interested in this than the SSD.

Re: Solid State Drives
Boot times are intensely fast. I'm not sure how you'd perceive them as even remotely similar to the ol' spinnin' platters.

Re: Solid State Drives
Interestingly, the biggest knock on them, seems to be reliability, and how long they last.
SSDs can only be rewritten so many times - so you have to provision part of the drive for redundancy, or at least that's how I understand it. Guys in the PC LE forum report data/audiio, just, up and disappearing on SSDs... Maybe firmware and data handling voodoo can fix it? We'll see. Now that Apple offers SSDs as an option for Mac Pros, I would assume Apple's implementation is more reliable. I just can't imagine them offering internal storage that randomly misplaces huge chunks of data - can you? |

I have only seen them in 2,5" ...but would seem like a great system drive at max 500 GB.
