They didn't. They had the S3L already. This unit will be made along side that one and/or become the same thing.

What bums me out is that this likely means no "S4" like I wanted.

Well said - but mini S6 is what I want!

Isn't S3 a mini S6 or what do you mean, specifically?

To me the S3 is a maxi Artist Mix

A mini S6 would be something more in line of all the feature areas of the S6 - just smaller... In my mind there has been a gaping hole in the controller market for 10+ years. Rather than anyone improving on proven designs (Artist MC Control and HUI in particular) we get what we have now. Or maybe its just all in my mind looking for seed money to make it happen --- LOL....

EDIT--> OK I watched a few videos on the S3L and kind of see more how this works. I didn't get that the the top row of encoders in in two horizontal sections (thought they were vertical with the others). I kind of get it. Looks good but is still not what I personally was hoping for for a new project studio controller. Doesn't suck either though....

The I/O is a great option to have as a monitor section for your interfaces that may be mounted somewhere else. It has 8 knobs that can be locked off int he top right to do that. And...

It also is a killer option to have a simple, high quality AVB I/O and with really good mic pre's for when you want to not take your whole big rig with you and throw the S3 under your arm and go out to track a (singer, etc) friend with just your laptop. It's one simple Ethernet connector for your audio interface and the EUCON control.

Hi - perhaps you misunderstood me… Or I wasn't clear - which given how crazy the booth was, is very likely! ;-D

There are three solid options for transport control:

1. Our demo guys at AES were using it quite effectively with no other transport control and his laptop was behind the S3: The Touch Strip. You hold Shift and 1, 2, 3 or 4 and it does rewind, FF, Stop/Play and Record Ready.
2. Add an Artist Transport - For $ 450 extra you get a whole bunch of Transport goodness, Macros, Num Keypad, Jog/Shuttle/Scroll wheel.
3. QWERTY Keyboard. The thin Mac Keyboard fits right in front with the perfect angle snug against the S3 front. I would argue this is perfect for most people because they are used to all the transport functions and fly on it. (I'm one of those people and that's how it is on my S3.) It's funny how many professional mixers I've seen on ICON and although they have a really nice 'official' transport buttons in front of them - they use the QWERTY keyboard and especially the space bar.

Check it out in person is my best advice, get your hands on it and spend some time. It's a lot of fun!

Will it work on PT10 or does it require PT11? (Still stuck on 10 owing to some plugins. I'm looking at you, Relab.)

Hi Mr Luke!

To operate Pro Tools | S3, your computer must meet these minimum system requirements

EUCON-enabled audio or video software
Pro Tools 11.2.1 or higher

Can i use the I/O on the S3 for 5.1 monitoring ?

I'm using a nMP with HDN and 16 x 16 I/O, if the S3 can be used for 5.1 monitoring, this will free up my 16x16 for inserts or summing.

Details are not clear about this yet, but I would assume no since it's an AVB interface which means aggregate as far as PT software is concerned. You can't aggregate HD stuff with non-HD stuff AFAIK...
