Default 16-bit v 24-bit Optimized Mixer

I'm using the 16-bit optimized mixer on my NuBus PTIII sustem, PT4.1.1. Since I can only handle 16-bit disk files that seems logical. I use a number of plug-ins (mostly Waves) and of course they operate at 24-bit resolution. I've not seen any comprehensive explanation of what exactly the difference is between the 16-bit and 24-bit optimized mixers, and I'm wondering if there would be any advantage in my using the 24-bit?
