If you haven't already thought of this, think of it now

How important is the speed of the system drive in general? Would a Sata1 16bm cache cut the mustard?
I'm trying to save some money... so Ill just get one sata2 32mb cache caviar black as the pro tools audio drive.

FW 400 = 400 Mb/s (50MB/s)
FW 800 = 800 Mb/s (100MB/s)
SATA II = 3000 Mb/s (375 MB/s)

These speeds are all theoretical maximums of each bus, but the point is that SATA 2 will not be a bottleneck with any drive on the market right now.

Also if you have a Firewire audio interface, this leaves more firewire bandwidth for it.

Not as crucial as your audio drive, but it will make a difference in how fast programs load/respond, etc.

I'm running a Solid state drive for a system drive and my computer boots in less than 10 seconds. With the regular HDD it takes 30-45 seconds. Same ratio of speed for opening programs, etc. It definitely makes a difference.

I can't wait until the SSDs become the bit mainstream for storage. I see things like the new OCZ drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227502). Man this thing is a monster, but I would not want to pay the price tag. I think that some of these prices could fall by almost in half in the new year.

The Collossus is quite impressive in specs. I especially like the "garbage collection" feature that continually optimizes it during periods of low activity... completely independant of the OS.

One thing about SSDs, when data is erased, it's gone forever. No trace is left behind like on a regular hard drive. I think that for this reason regular HDD's might be around as backup media for quite a while.

The cost of manufacturing SSDs has to be a tiny fraction of the cost of manufacturing any mechanical dive.

NOBODY is going to maintain an assembly line for mechanical drives.

Pretty good point. Or more correctly no one is going to maintain a mechanical drive line once SSD memory prices reach equilibrium with conventional mechanical technology.

SSDs have a long way to go to reach equilibrium with platters
