Default 882/20 with 96 i/o legacy

I have a new 96 i/o and I hooked up my old 882/20 to the 'legacy' port. The Hardware Setup recognizes it and I can use the "identify" function. The ch 1-2 digi-analog toggle works as well. All sync cables are correctly installed. I can not get any inputs to be heard in Pro Tools. Haven't had time or need to test 100% yet, so stupid oversight a distinct possibility. Any thoughts?

Have you assigned ins and outs in the I/O setup? Your 96 will typically have the first 8 ins and outs, and the legacy interface will take the next 8.

Yes. The default assigns the 96i/o 16 inputs but I deleted the last 8 and assigned them to the 882. The 882 is definitely recognized but no audio passes in the inputs. I have not tried to use the outputs yet, as I have no need, but will continue to troubleshoot. Also, I have made sure I am using only 16bit sessions when attempting to use the 882. Also it is worth mentioning that the 882 occasionally goes randomly into 'identify' mode with all lights on even though I am not using it.

I only bring this up because it's an easy mistake -- the legacy interfaces don't show input level on the front-panel meters, only output. Make sure you're checking for level on a record-enabled track or aux with inputs 9-16 assigned.

According the answerbase, you also have to be using Superclock:
