Need help understanding license/ subscriptions
Hello,
I’ve had a PT perpetual license for several years. I’ve occasionally downloaded various “ freebies” biotek, falcon. But, to this date, I still don’t understand the various license/subscription options. I have perpetual until March 2021. Can someone, in plain English, explain my options going forward? For instance, can I just not extend and own what I’ve got, at that point? Can I currently either buy/ rent a bundle, like classic compressors or AIR FX collection? Are those options only for subscription members? If I switch next year to subscription, do I lose what I’ve bought? I plead stupidity. I just don’t understand these choices. I clearly need some help. Anyone, everyone. Please advise me. Thank you Steve Kaufman [email protected] |

Re: Need help understanding license/ subscriptions
This would be best answered by a dealer like Sweetwater, GC Pro, Alto Music, etc. Your current perpetual license will continue to work with the newest version released up until next March. Once that expires, you could stay at that version for probably a few years anyway.
A subscription would keep you up to date at all times, BUT you would have to renew every year so you have a valid license(when a subscription runs out, you can't open Pro Tools). As for plugins and instruments, that calls for more thought. Personally, I'm not big on subscriptions, but I do have one for the Slate Everything bundle(which honestly covers a lot of needs, including classic compressors and EQ's). For "classic compressors", I'm more inclined to buy(Waves has constant sales for good pricing) over more subscriptions. Re instruments, while I use the AIR stuff often, there are plenty of other options

Re: Need help understanding license/ subscriptions
Thanks for your response. I sorted it all out since I posted, but appreciate it. I’ll stick with perpetual. As I’m not a power user, I might let it go a few years, once next March 2021 comes, but will see. Only running 2018.4 for the past year.

Re: Need help understanding license/ subscriptions
Please remember that Avid no longer offers the perpetual reinstatement option and only offer the crossgrade to a subscription model. However, there are still a few resellers offering reinstatement/ upgrade codes which SHOULD be valid for several years.
