Default Digi002 Input Question

I've searched around but haven't found anything official or definitive . .

We're recording classical guitar and want the quietest path possible into ProTools (v8) with our current gear. We're using Oktava mics, which we've used in the past, and our FMR RNP Pre-amps. When we record, I usually send the outputs of the preamps into the line-ins of Channels 1-4. It was always my understanding that using the line-ins bypassed the preamps on the 002.

I read recently that inputs 1-4 do not actually by pass the board preamps and that, instead, I should be running my external pre-amps into channels 5-8; what I've read is that those are the quietest analog inputs on the 002. (Although some people say that 7-8 are a bit noisier because of the proximity of the RCAs right next to 'em.)

Anyone know about all this stuff? What's the quietest way -- analog -- to send the mic signal thought the 002?

Thanks,

stu

+1. Exactly how I would do it. I never noticed any extra noise on 7&8 or 5&6, but I would try both since you are going into "critical" mode.
