Default OT: Motivating recording documentaries or movies

Before I would head into a studio session with my former bandmates, I'd watch the Metallica documentary on the making of the black album. Not that I'm a huge fan of the album - but there's just something about watching the process that gets me going.

I just watched "Being Mick," a fairly recent documentary on Mick Jagger during the recording of his last solo album. Again, not a big fan of the album, but seeing him jet-set about, track in hotel rooms with Bono, have lunch with Lenny Kravitz, etc., and cut tracks with his daughters at home, it just inspires me to work.

Anyone here have a documentary or movie that puts them in the 'mood' to record, or even just jam?

I've got my DVD pass in hand...

My favorite band documentary of all time is This Is Spinal Tap. It really puts me in the mood to record.

I saw the Mick Jagger thing and was surprised at how down to earth and genuine he seemed to be...atleast for a rockstar.

The following get me "in the mood" for recording:

Funky Monks - Chilipeppers record Blood Sugar with Rick Rubin

Pink Floyd - Live At Pompeii - really cool Dark Side session clips

The Last Waltz -(mostly a live concert, but gets me in the mood anyway)

And of course...SPINAL TARP!

I'm looking forward to seeing the Motown movie (forgot the name) and Wilco's "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart". Has anyone seen these films yet?

For me it would have to be the "Rush - Exit Stage Left" movie, "Melissa Etheridge - Alive and Alone" and, of course, the live clips from "Led Zeppelin - Song Remains the Same"...

Ah, the Commitments! I love that movie (my parents are irish immigrants).

Weird fact: If you have it on DVD, you're lucky. It was yanked from the shelves shortly after release.

This is a great list of stuff. I'm hitting block buster this weekend for sure.

Yeah Sean...'The Commitments', though not a documentary, is such a great movie. I've got Irish in my blood, too, and it's fascinating to see how it might be to start a band there. I always found it interesting how they idolized Wilson Pickett, probably because there are just so many great soul singers in the U.S.

Jerome,
I re-saw 'The Last Waltz' recently, and couldn't believe how well it was done. I had seen it years ago, but didn't catch the spirit of it. Levon Helm on drums and some vocal solos probably impressed me most, and I caught them again on a SNL rerun. He was great both times. (and of course, he went on to star as Sissy Spacek/Loretta Lynn's father in 'Coal Miner's Daughter').

I tell you guys though, I could kick myself about this. About 6 months ago, this teenage guitarist friend gave me a DVD copy of 'The Fast and the Furious' he'd gotten off the internet. Well, it had dialogue, but the music was missing! I'm about to start learning AvidDV Express, and it would be great to score the music in PT, and bring it into Avid.
But, the dang thing got loaned to a friend who loaned it to a friend, who.... and now, nobody can find it. But, don't you know that would be a great place to start learning audio/film...
Well, here nor there, Bastiaan is compiling a short film file for me to score.

BRB/Jackson... I want to see 'The Making of Joshua Tree/U2'... I bet it's good.

U2 - The Making of The Joshua Tree -

This is my personal favorite. I like it for so many reasons. It's great to get insight on how a song-writing band works together. But the insight of how important the producers (Eno, Lanois in this case) are to the songwriting, feel, and overall sound of a record. Most of all hearing Flood tell the story of Eno's attempts to sabotage Where The Streets Have No Name and the way he says "Briiawn".

Nothing gets me inspired quite like U2. Someday I'll tell everyone here about my successful attempt to locate the actual Joshua Tree used on the album cover. I have a great black & white photo of me standing in front of it hanging in my studio.
