I've proofread one of them (yeah it should even have my name at the end!)....

But honestly my 2 cents: stick with the Digidesign manual. It's the only book you'll ever need.

I personally thought that Digi did a good job on the manual. I have read both of the books that are offered on the Digi site and they were O.K.. The DUC is a reference that you cant beat with a stick. Read the Manual and read the DUC and you should be able to figure out anything you need to.

I can tell you 2 books I would heartily NOT reccomend

1) The musicians guide to pro tools

2) Pro Tools 5.1 for Music Production ...(Mike Collins)

Musicians guide to pro tools is 110 pages long and VERY basic

Pro Tools 5.1 has less than half its 382 pages devoted to actually uisng pro tools, and all of the stuff you could pick up on the DUC.

Have you tried the tutorials in the Digizine and the digi demos/online tutorials

I bought both the above books and was dissapionted, to say the least , in both of them.

Also teaching others below your standard of experience with PT and learning from users above your level of experience (both in person) beats flicking through a book any day for me.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Well it explains clearly every single PT function, as a manual is supposed to do. There is simply nothing more to it, so all you'll ever find in a PT book is the same info you already read in your manual but presented in another manner (usually for people that have trouble understanding the manual).

Where the manual is short and to the point, the books will use long sentences and boring historical details and unhelpful examples. That's my experience.

Right on Bob,

Thanks, I'm glad you like the videos. That's exactly it. There is no substitution for using the manual. And the PT manual is one of the best.

However, just as when I was learning applications like Director or Lightwave, I used the manual, forums, formal courses, books and the video format to see the program in action first hand.

I always ended up getting the most out of the formal training and the videos whereas the books can be cumbersome and some other manuals are not as comprehensive as the PT reference guide, especially Lightwave arggggg!!!
