Ultra 160 SCSI & Digi 001. A bad mix?
I understand Ultra 160 drive technology is unneccessary with Digi 001, but is it even compatible? Apparently there are some issues revolving around PCI bandwidth and how busmastering cards like ATTO's UL3D (dual channel Ultra 160 PCI card) can occupy too much (PCI bandwidth) Can anyone shed some light on this subject? Also, does anyone use SoftRaid? It is the most rockin' raidware out there. Any SoftRaid-based, PCI-friendly drive set-up suggestions? Is this pointless? Is there balance to be struck? Why do I get the impression that I'd be better of with an allegedly fast, audio dedicated IDE drive right now.
With two Seagate Cheetah 10K Ultra 160 drives, I can get 57mb SUSTAINED transfer when the drives are striped. This is through one channel of the aforementioned ATTO UL3D card...the other channel is then available for slower SCSI devices. BTW- I read about the 20 (10) sync rate slow down and 32mb burst rate crippling errata...unfortunate. I still want to use Pro Tools 5.0.1 LE. Is there any hope for future support of today's premiere drive technology? Do you need beta testers? I do know the folks at ATTO. Their software is fine, their 1.50 firmware is unmatched! BTW II- Seagate has recently shipped Cheetah X15 series Ultra 160 drives. They spin at 15,000 rpm...unreal. Great for video! But with Digi 001 is this a "seek and destroy" mission? It is noble to offer a poor man's Pro Tools. Any info is greatly appreciated!! |
