Five second GUI freezes !!!

Her is what I get from time to time :

The audio keeps running normally but the whole Pro Tools interface is frozen, meters , faders everything is locked for a few (around five) seconds. Needless to say Pro Control doesn't respond either.

I am now confident it has nothing to do with Spotlight. My intuition is it has something to do either with autosave or some memory management routine of either Mac OS or Pro Tools.

The question is what about automation during those lapses. I haven't yet been confronted to this while printing a mix but I fear that all automation must be frozen too during one of these "crises" ?...

Hi,

Yes, i've been seeing the same thing, and on occasions its been as long as 10 seconds and will often make the playback skip! like it all gets stored in the cache and gets released all at once. its seems to be getting more regular and for longer periods as well.

We've got 4-systems here and they all do it. I'm going to try turning AUTO SAVE off to see if that's what's doing it. I can't think of anything else because we have all of the OS "features" turned off.

We are also experiencing this very annoying problem. Audio keeps playing but everything else freezes for 5-10 seconds.

Hi. The only time I've had this happen was after I had transferred some files from an external Firewire DVD rec./player and had left the DVD in the mechanism. Once I removed the DVD everything was OK. Had the same symptoms as you all are describing. I'm running PT 5.1.1 on OS 9.1.

...same here; not only will audio keep playing, but it will still record (even though it took a year off my life when it happed mid vocal take yesterday).

Getting the same thing here, however I really notice it start happening when I've got multiple stereo Instrument tracks running (especially with Indigo V40). For example I was getting this constantly yesterday and the session I was working in had 5 Instrument tracks with multiple things automated and they were running Indigo V40 1, 2, 3, 4 (two were running #1).

There's another thing btw. I never understood why there were Indigo #x until yesterday. I had multiple tracks all running Indigo V40 #1 but when I solo only one of the channels, the other tracks still played through (even on mute). The only way to stop this was to bypass the Indigo on that other channel.

My #1 concern is that it's doing it will I am RTD mode and it might be dropping automation.

I get this also, but I found an interesting quirk. Even though all my key commands go away (like the ability to stop from the keyboard), I find I can use the mouse to click stop in the transport, and it stops it. At which point I'm back to normal. So maybe you can shorten that moment of panic in front of clients...
