Default Default Session Timeline Selection

is there a reason the default session timeline highlights 4-bars?

I have been reading though Pro Tools 101 and slowly though the getting started and reference guide. When I was just trying to get some audio in, I was unfamiliar with the functionality of the timeline selection markers. It seems to be useful for over-dubbing -but has the appearance it is overwriting my performance. The regions lists the files -but I need to do additional reading on this area.

Thanks again,
