Default Just back from AES and the word on PT 6 is....

I'm not sure actually. I thought I could dig up some more info from the Digi guys at AES but they seem pretty uninformed themselves. I don't know if it's part of Digidesigns secretive policies or what but they couldn't really answer many of my questions regarding PT 6. Things they would say.

-PT 6 is OS X / Windows XP only.
-OS 9 support is dead.
Mix cards and D24 cards will be supported under PT6 and OS X.
-Plug-ins will need to be rewritten for OS X, current OS9 plug-ins will not work in 6.

The guy I was mainly speaking to said MIDI was improved but not to the point of a typical sequencing based program. According to him additional improvements were to be made in the future. He said Christmas was the target ship date although it could slip to early next year. He also seemed to think that initially PT6 would not benefit greatly from the second CPU in a dual processor system, even with OS X. Again a future release would improve this situation. This was in response to my question regarding better RTAS performance on a TDM system. He wouldn't quote upgrade pricing but seemed to think that many of digidesigns plug-ins would be upgraded for free or for a low price. Third parties will have to decide for themselves how to price upgrades. I spoke to Waves and they said they are currently working on OS X upgrades and that there would have to be some charge for the additional R & D required. Also they seemed pretty negative about iLock support which I thought a bit odd considering how many hat their current copy protection scheme.

As for the look of 6, my take is it's a little cheesy but alot like most other apps that are out right now. Basically though I appreciate the fact that it's not a total redesign and it still seems to work like you'd expect pro tools to work.
