Avid - I am really hurt this time...
I have been a professional Pro Tools user for about 12 years and I also lead the transition for our whole company to Pro Tools. We have 10+ systems, all HD. I recently set up a home studio and bought a new Mbox (3rd Gen) partly because I thought I would like another copy of the Pro Tools software as I don't want to carry my ilok home (and was thinking about upgrading to PT complete production tool kit). I made the purchased last month of the Mbox bundled with Pro tools software. I noticed the box has old Pro Tools 8 software in it but I didn't worry about it as I had been told and had seen advertised 'free upgrades to Pro tools 10'..
After registering I found I was not given any option for a free upgrade so I emailed them. I was informed of the rules for upgraded and it was only if you purchased 'pro tools 9'. I was totally shocked... why I am punished for the shop holding old stock? I thought the software version in the box was not relevant as it would just be updated depending on when you bought it. After double checking I was informed that 'We would like to let you know that you can upgrade to Pro Tools 10 from version 8 for a fee of U$499.00 at the following site.' So this is what was waiting for me after spending $799 on a brand new interface with software... I think this is disgrace.. I think you might have finally lost me Avid... Anyone else agree with me here? Not happy.. Ramesh |

I'm sorry, but what on earth led you to believe you'd get a free upgrade from 8LE to PT10? Seems unrealistic

I do think that if Avid has that policy they should require their resellers to return old product to them. I know I purchased a Mbox micro before PT 9 came out and it came with 7.3 and I got ver 8 for free. Thats 2 paid updates So it stands to reason that it was their policy. I think your dealer should make good on the mix up. If the product your buying is out of date then the dealer should make it very aware prior to purchasing it.

Re: Avid - I am really hurt this time...
Go back to the dealer and get it straightened out.
BTW- the whole "I'm hurt" angle is pretty laughable, in a pathetic way.

ejwells... I remember why I don't post normally... cause people like you decide to insult others for no real reason. I am upset about what has happened... its just called descriptive language. I don't think your response was really needed.

As of Pro Tools 9, the software no longer comes free with the hardware. Only 8 comes free. 9 and 10 can be purchased bundled with hardware, but the bundle actually costs more than just the hardware. So you're paying for the software still. An Mbox 3 Pro bundled with PT 9 is $999. The hardware alone (with PT 8) is $700-800. It's always been this way since 9 was released. Any dealer you go to will tell you the same thing! Should have researched!

Re: Avid - I am really hurt this time...
i just check on the dealers site. i definitely paid the bundled price (they are offering it on the site with PT 9 and free upgrade to PT 10) - I had seen this offered.
As some of the guys suggested I will speak to the dealer.. I bought it from the shop near my house, not my normal pro dealer. It would have never happened in the first place if I had... |
