It's due to all of the security that Microsoft has in its updates.

Restore computer to factory settings
When computer finally reinstalls software choose NO automatic updates
Once desktop is up and running go to the security area under windows update
Choose download updates but let me choose when to install them selection and nothing else
Once windows update starts the update process it will show u a large number if updates to let win install
Install everything EXCEPT the security updates
It should let u select what u want to install
Once it has installed and updated ur computer with functional needed software
Return to the security area and choose NOT to let windows update ur computer

U may get a Java update. This is ok to install
Download the latest QuickTime software
Download the latest Adobe - flash, air, shockwave, reader

U should be set to install any avid software
Note: in the installation process of pro tools MP 9
There is a newer version of the ILOK software on the ILOK website I downloaded
Just say no when it ask if u want to download ILOK in the installation of mp8 process. I did download it but later had to uninstall and install the newer software

THIS WORKED FOR ME JUST FINE
Avid makes great product and u have had no issues once I left out all if the Microsoft security updates
