Default Re: Do I need a PreAmp before Fast Track Duo?

And one final comment. You mentioned VU meters, I would not be looking at a VU meter when setting preamp gain levels. I would be using the Pro Tools classic meter and thinking in dBFS... the natural units that the digital converter is delivering into Pro Tools, and especially with a low-end preamp you want to keep away from clipping or trying to get it to "saturate" like a valve or high end solid state preamp might in nice ways. Especially with stomp boxes with gain, or active pickups do not make the mistake of trying to record too hot a signal. A meter in dBFS can let you check you are well below a problem range, (try maybe aiming for -12dBFS peaks, a lot less than others might think...) but ultimately its not the meters but critical listening as you play with stuff, including that gain staging, that is important.
