Unhappy ProTools was working but it is now "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware"

Error: "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware. Make sure your hardware is connected and turned on. Click "OK" when hardware is ready."

Hardware was originally working. Then came up with this error. We unistalled ProTools then reinstalled & problem was fixed. This happened again later, so we did the same thing & it fixed it again. Error happened again, we downloaded software updates which fixed the problem. But now the error has happened again! Have the latest update which hasn't fixed it.

When I unplug the Mbox USB connection from the computer then plug it back into the computer it says "Found new hardware" It tries installing it, but then comes up with "Windows was unable to install your Mbox. Windows could not find driver software for your device."

We've used the program fine, but now again suddenly it doesn't want to work. If anyone has any ideas, help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I would dump Vista and go with Windows 7 64 bit. Meanwhile, did you do all the system tweaks, including turning OFF the power management feature on all USB ports?

Frankly Vista is a pig of a system. You would be better off with XP if you don't want to go for Win7 although I agree with Albee that would be the best way to go.

Read through this link, it may be of some help; Some of it may not be relevant but some might.

MUSO90..I'm running Protools LE 8.0.5 with an Mbox3 on Win7 64bits and I'm having exactly the same problem. Upgrading to Win7 will not fix the problem. I'm still waiting for somebody with the solution. I also had turned off all the USB power management plus I did all the tweaks for Win7 and still doesnt work.

I had work with Protools for more than 20yrs and never had any issues until version 8 came to the market.

I think you need at least version 8.04 with Vista, but I would go to 8.05 if you haven't already done so;
http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=393651

And install latest drivers to go with 8.05;
http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=379411

Re-install drivers with interface turned off then reboot with it turned on.

Once 8.05 installed run plugin updater;
http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=362895

I've found at least on my system, that switching hardware Interface on before booting computer, and shutting computer down before turning Interface off helps avoid the problem of losing driver communication with computer.

Default Re: ProTools was working but it is now "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware"

I just installed a separated USB card just for Protools and every problems that I had before, including "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware" are gone.

Try getting a USB card just for Protools. That will fix your problem.

Also you don't have to remove and re install Protools. Just got to Program files(86)/Degidesign/DAE/Drivers and find the Digi logo. Click on the logo and this will re install the drivers without removing the whole software.

Which version of PT are you using?

Post a Sandra Report.

- Please - Use SiSoftware's Sandra Lite application to generate a full system profile:

www.sisoftware.co.uk

Under SiSoftware Sandra, click on "Download & Buy" to download the free Sandra Lite version or purchase other versions. After installing Sandra, click on the 'Hardware' tab and run the 'Computer Overview', then copy and paste into your post here on the DUC.

Angry Re: ProTools was working but it is now "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware"

We bought an Mbox 3 and have been trying to use Pro Tools LE 8.0.5 on a two different Windows 7 64-bit systems since July.
Initially we installed on a laptop and it worked for a while, then we got the "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware" message. We tried everything we could find here, reinstalled a number of times, etc., then gave up and switched to a different, more powerful system (the first one was no slouch).
Once again, PTLE worked for a couple of weeks and then yielded the same error message again. So I tried everything I could find here and that made no difference.
We broke down and paid for a support call. The tech spent about 45 minutes going through everything, checking for the same stuff I had already fixed. Then he too gave up and issued an RMA for the Mbox 3.
I hope that fixes it.
He said that they did have a batch of bad hardware and he also said that some of the Mboxes were very sensitive to being unplugged from a USB port while the system was powered up - apparently doing so may damage the unit.
