Default Audio pops and audible spikes

I was up and running great, and the I loaded 10.4.6 auto with software update, then I manually downloaded 10.4.6 PPC from the web site.

I was still having success, but the I get these audible spikes/pops in the speakers, and the PT meters show the exact movement with the audible spikes.

This happens on ALL sessions that were great before???

I called digi, and replaced the power harness, but it did Not help.

I have followed the diagnostic suggestions from digi to the letter, and even un-installed PT 7.1 and re-installed.

I THINK THIS MUST BE A .002 PROBLEM???

QUESTION--- Have any of you replaced your .002 RACK, for any reason ???

I am right in the middle of a Priority session, and I can't get rid of these spikes ??? HELP !!!!!

PS...I have searched the DUC for days, and I can't find this exact issue. I used words like audible/clicks-pops-spikes...

How often? Does it happen even when PT is resting?

Are you using any other digital devices? Is the clocking all sorted out. It sounds most like a clocking problem but if you have searched "pops and clicks" you would have seen this suggestion already.

Just thought I would check.

It happens when I playback, many sessions that should be fine. I do have a Rosetta 200, but I Completely un-hooked it, and ran Analog out from the .002, and the spikes are still happening with "internal" clock and analog ??????????

Are the pops printed on the audio track?

Could be you printed the pops and clicks when you had the Rossetta hooked up and are still hearing them

If it is a clocking problem, you would get them even when PT is Idle. Were you getting them before when you had the Rossetta hooked up when you were idle?

Hey dubaifox...Thanx for jumpin in to try to help.

I have had a sucessful time for many sessions with PT 7.1.

I have a Zsystems OctiPatch--8x8 Optical patch bay, with ALL optical Monster (highest quality).

I went to record another client, and I was using an instrumental track that was already a "split track" or 1 side was the lead vx, and the other side was the instrumental, but it was in a steroe interleavened format.

I Bounced it to a dual mono, so I could seperate the vx from the music (which did not work), and when I went to have him sing along with the new bounce, I noticed the Cli8cks and spikes, and pops.

It was in record, so I could see the spikes, and I always hit Command/period to NOT record when I don't like the take, so I actually never recorded anything.

Then I closed that session, and opened several wonderful sessions, and they all Now had the spike/pops. This was true even when I Completely disconected the Optical from the .002, and ran it in Analog ???????????

I put the new power harness in, and the same thing exists????????

I reloaded a disk image of my hard drive when I had 10.4.3, and it still does the same thing???????

I did get a refurbished dual 2.7, and I am wondering if 1--the .002 needs work, or 2--the "new" computer needs work.

Maybe ram issue?????? I put 2 GB of new Apple ram in and it ran great for 4 months ???????????

HELP ????????? Thank You dubaifox...

I can exchange the .002 for a new one for $350.........

Default Re: Audio pops and audible spikes

I am NOW sure this is a problem with my computer, after digi convinced me to try another computer with my .002, and it was clean with the other comptuer. I blamed these spikes on the .002...

I just got a dual 2.7 ReFurb, and I took it to the Apple store, and the Genus guy said that I need to completely wipe (erase my drive) and re-install everything, including the OS X 10.4.

I am convinced that 10.4.6 is 1 olive short of a full picnic.

Case in point...When you repair permissions with 10.4.3 to 10.4.5 you can see disk utility write the repairs as it goes through the repair process.

With 10.4.6 (OK PPC) for me, there is NO indication of any repairing you can observe, and I think this means that we have a gigantic Can of Worms with the "Itel" effort that has been put in to 10.4.6 to try and ease in to the Intel world, and out of the PPC world, and I WILL NEVER LOAD 10.4.6 AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK.I'm pissed !!!!! I firmly beleive that the combo of 7.1 and 10.4.6 has destroyed days of my life, and caused me to get clients to hold off until I "Figure it out", so we can get back to work!!!!!!! Man, I'm Pissed !!!!

This almost caused me to purchase ($450 exchange) another .002, because I was convinced that it was the problem. I have about 25 CD's of different programs, including mucho plug-ins to re-install now, after I Wipe my Drive. It will take me a day just to save all the files and folders I can't live without.....

No More 10.4.6 for my PPC !!!!!!!!!!! Back to 10.4.5 for me !!!!!!

By the way, I have Not done this yet, and the Jury is still out, IF the software (OS X) ends up being the problem...

This is a good thing. It means that everything is in the right place. I always notice on a new OS install, repair permissions does nothing.

But after several software installs, random crashes, download etc, repairing permissions does more and more. Sounds like it was a problem with the computer. No?!

With 10.4.3 to .5 you Could Observe the permission repair code/lines being written. With 10.4.6 I have never observed any lines being written, having repaired permissions 20 to 40 times, with re-loading etc.

Does this mean that the "REPAIR PERMISSIONS" in 10.4.6 does not need to re-write the code, and actually that 10.4.6 may be Much More Stable ????

I doubt this ????

Also, I do not think My Computer is at fault, but the Software, and I have Not reconciled this yet. I will post the final results...

OK--I just got a PCI-X FW 800 card. I think the FW bus on the G5 is not up to handling the .002R load.

I can't beleive the G4's actually have a better FW system. I ran PT on my iBook, with NO problems, and the dual 2.7 keeps poping and spiking. Very upset.....I can't Beleive the run around from Apple.........VERY Upset !!!!!

Genius Bar---Shmeius bar...These guys are Posers !!!!!!!!!!

Compared to most Mac users, they are geniuses. But overall, they're just support people.
