Default Why is \"Paste, on the fly\" a no go?

Grabbing a region I wanted to "pop it in" at several places, it was a guitar riff, and there is no math or set patterns to my arrangement decisions, I put things here, there, everywhere, like anyone.
While rolling I pressed the Apple V command to paste the riff "on beat", it wound up way back from where the cursor was (which was a bore) & when I pressed Apple V again nothing happened! No further pastes possible. What is this? Do one paste then stop functioning?
How can I "pop things in" on the fly intuitively with no grids, markers etc? Obviously a sampler could do it but PT has got to be better that that , aint it?
I RTFM, I must have missed it. How is this most basic task done by you guys out there? I am sure I have seen my chums running Logic Audio do it, what about Pro Tools?

Thanks

Jules

Make sure the track you want to paste to is the active track and while in playback, hit the down arrow before you paste.

I see yes! Thanks! Once I got into groove with

apple V - down arrow!
apple V - down arrow!
apple V - down arrow!
apple V - down arrow!
apple V - down arrow!

In / out / shake it all about!

I was able to paste short funky guitar riffs in the right spots & very nearly in time, needing just a bit of nudging afterwards! V happy! Thanks again!

Was that in the manual? If so what page, I can't find it!

Jules

Be nice to have that on one button hit on PT 5 eh?

Well it is in the manual, but not stated the way you expect no doubt.

The down arrow is documented as being the method to grab the playback cursor location and place the edit cursor at that location (remember that there are two cursors - the playback and the edit cursor).

Paste, simply always pastes to the edit cursor position.

So when you hit the down arrow you're simply placing the edit cursor at the desired location (where the playback cursor is) - and when you paste, that's where it goes.

If you wanted to - you could easily create a macro to do this with QuicKeys. PT 5.0 does have some macro capability built in I believe - so perhaps this will be possible to automate without QuicKeys.

I will create a macro button for it, thanks
