Best 88 wieghted keyboard for Black Gospel
Need a great Black Gospel piano sound (a lot of bass octaves WAY down there on the left hand and 3, 4, and 5 note voicings on the right hand usually below E5). Any recommendations on which keyboard to use? I have access to (can hit up my friends to borrow for a few days) a Kurzwell 2600 and a Roland RD-700 and a XV-88.
Any thoughts on which one would be best suited? Thanks |

You know, I have to second that S90.... VERY nice. But of those models, well... I'd consider the Sweetwater Piano Sample CD with our Young Chang Virtual Grand I would venture more towards the RD700....

Re: Best 88 wieghted keyboard for Black Gospel
If you can find a used Kurzweil PC-88, they are hands down the best controllers w/piano sound I've ever played. I do a lot of live gigs and it really sounds fantastic in a live mix, plus it has great feeling action. Somehow they really messed up in the new purple versions, they have a much more spongey feel now, and the piano sample is not the same.
If you're going for something new, I'd go with the current Yamaha line, but the PC88 beats the pants of them. |

Re: Best 88 wieghted keyboard for Black Gospel
I have a Yamaha S90 and a Kurzweil PC2R (rack) with the orchestral expansion. The best of both worlds...you will not be let down. The PC-88 has not such a great keyboard and the piano sound is not as good as the PC2 (the new version of the PC-88). I wouldn't recommend the PC2 because the keyboard, while better than the PC-88 in terms of reliability, is also not so good in terms of action. Forget about the K2600 unless you have lots 'o cash and need sequencing and sampling. I tried the XV-88 and RD-700 before buying the S90, and found the action to be mushy and the sounds sub-par, although their XV expansion cards are better, but for more $$$.
If you have to pick one, get the Yamaha S90. That's an excellent keyboard, all around.

Re: Best 88 wieghted keyboard for Black Gospel
I should have mentioned the P80 as well. I just replaced my P80 with the S90 as my main keyboard, but kept it for gigs and as a portable practice piano. It's only 37 pounds, very compact, and has an excellent piano sound and keyboard, although not much of anything else. You can get one of those for only $899 new. Son of David, I might be interested in selling mine, with case...
