Default Once again: popping and crackling on a AMIII

Just bought a new Toolbox CD. Unfortunately I still get crackles and pops on the spdif output once I disable mirroring. I used to have this on my other AMIII with PT 5.1, butthere only on the left spdif output. As a workaround I had to flip back to PT 5.0. No problems there.

All my AMIII cards have the QE revision, so it seems I'm the only one who have this issue... ( http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ub...&f=24&t=007697
and http://duc .digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=24&t=007520)

Config:
G4 400MHz AGP
AudioMedia III QE
SCSI 2930U
two display cards (both ATI 128)

Ofcourse I ran the following tests:
digitest passed
swapping PCI slots
different computers: G3 beige
lots of other transcendental tests... but still the same problem.

Who's is suffering from the same problem: having a QE revise AMII with PT 5.1.1 and still have crackling audio once the mirror is taken away????

Try the following:
-Remove the SCSI card and all PCI monitor cards. Install the AMIII in the slot next to the AGP monitor card.

-Trash the DigiSetup and restart.

-When booting, reset the computer's PRAM. To perform this, hold down the command+option+R+P keys immediately after you boot the Mac (and hear the first chime). Continue to hold those keys down until you hear the Mac chime 3 times, release the keys and allow the computer to boot to the desktop.

Thanks Brent, I followed your instructions,: removed all cards, AMIII next to AGP graphics, zapped PRAM, trashed digisetup, PT prefs and DAE prefs. But still the same: crackles in PT 5.1.1 only on the spdif output, after disabling mirroring. With PT 5.0 no problems.

There's another thing I found out: I got two AMIII cards, both rev QE. The oldest one (BK6839) suffers from the problem discribed above, the newest (BK78086) also, but with that one it makes no difference in ProTools 5.0. Also crackles there

What's going on??? Why does nobody else seem to have this problem? Do I have to wait until there's a version for OS X?

-If you are running your sessions at 48kHz, try one at 44.1kHz and see if the crackling persists.

-What device are you using to monitor the S/PDIF outputs of the card? If possible, try another device and see if anything changes.

Thanks for the suggestions, Brent.
I always use 44.1 kHz, for CD-production. If I switch the internal clock to 48 kHz the crackling gets worse.
The spdif output of the AMIII goes into a MOTU 2408 mark 2.

When I change this to another spdif input (an old SONY DAT 57 ES) I get the same crackling on the left channel, maybe even worse. I found out in other settings that the Sony DAT is more critical to clock changes than the Motu.

Do you have any other suggestion? Did you already test it yourself?

Thanks!

I have a QE rev AMIII card and everything checks out fine. In Fact, I've tried it on a couple of systems.

System #1:
Beige G3/266 OS 9.1
PTLE 5.1.1
SPDIF out to 001 system (#2)

System #2:
PIII/733 WIN Me
PTLE 5.1.1
SPDIF out to 001 system (#1)

I was unable reproduce the crackling on my AMIII card.
Do you perhaps have the sound drivers installed? Is the Sound CP set to built-in or Digi? Is the Digi CP installed?

Hope this helps,
