outboard pre with mbox 2

ok, so my friend just got a new mic pre and i went to help him hook it up today. its a BAE 1272. anyways i plugged it into the line input, set pt to 0db, set the 1272 to 12 oclock with the output about 2/3 the way. it didnt sound so hot...to really get the color of the 1272 i had to use the pad on the mbox 2. that let me crank up the 1272. without it, it kinda distorted. does this sound right? some of my friends said they use this with their 002 and there is no problem........
