Hd Native and other interfaces

I wanted to see it is possible to have a hd native system that ran other interfaces not linked thru the card, such as a fire wire audio card?

Well, yes and no.

As far as the HD software is concerned, you don't even need to have any HD hardware connected, you just need a license, and you can run it with any hardware you like up to 32 I/O. This will give you all of the software features of HD.

However, if you want any of the hardware features provided by the card, you will not be able to use it at the same time as an interface that is not connected to the card.

You would just be running the equivalent of regular PT10 and the Complete Toolkit, and it would be cheaper to just buy those.

On the other hand, if you plan to use HD Native in the studio, and just want to be able to run the software with a more portable setup (location recording, etc.), then it might make sense to get the whole system.

Just wanted to make sure you could. We want to eventually upgrade to a form of hd, but it might be just the card at first then the interface later.

Unless you're buying used, I'm not sure how you will do that. Avid no longer sells the card by itself, only bundled with an interface. The good news is that the bundles are on sale.

Right, unless you find an HD license by itself on say, eBay.

That being said... a new HD interface is likely to sound better than any FireWire interface, so you're better off getting the bundle.
