Default Advice wanted on PT MIXPlus and new G4s

I am overseeing the purchase of a new PT MIXPlus rig with a G4(?) for a new studio. The questions I have are:

1. Is the G4 733 with SuperDrive worth the doubling in price?
2. Is anyone having any luck with dual AGP cards other than the Jeronimo?
3. Is anyone having any luck with SCSI drives other than Digi or Cheetahs, et cetera? (i.e. Digi-approved drives)
4. Along that same line, how about other SCSI accelerators that don't cost $550 with cables?
5. What are you folks using for backup storage? What about the SuperDrive?
6. Where are the best places (prices) to get the G4?

Any helpful info is appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm running a new G4 733 and a MixPlus system. I don't think there is anything available to burn data to the DVD-R drive and if there is I am totally overlooking it. The only software included is for making DVD videos. Needless to say I am a little ticked off about that. Great system but I would avoid the Superdrive unless you find out that it can burn data.

I just got my 5.1 MixPlus system up and running on my G4 466, 384 RAM. I bought a ProMax dual monitor card direct from ProMax for $313 (ship 2nd day air to my door). It works flawlessly. I am relativly new to Pro Tools and was amazed at how easy the whole system installed and came together. Hats off to Digi!

Vaphoron,

I talked to a guy yesterday that knows his Macs, and he said that you are correct: The DVD-R software will only write movies, you cannot use it for data, at least at this point in time. Therefore, it makes the DVD-R quite useless for digital audio, and IMHO should definitely not be included on a "Digital Audio" computer. Either don't include it, or don't call it a "Digital Audio" G4.

I have decided to go with a DP 450 that I found with a ProMax DH AGP. Any advice or ideas are still appreciated, as this decision is not really final until the gear is actually installed.

Thanks to you two who actually posted.

There are issues w/ DP MAC's seems most if not all folks have to disable the second posesor to get PT to work. I've been using a Miles U2W card from Initio. We have 2 systems using this card and have had no problems at all.

Have you guys checked with Roxio regarding (Pioneer) SuperDrive support? i.e. 733Mhz

Toast or Jam. And what about Dantz?

These drives do support CD-r DVD-r etc.

Has anyone 'burned' a DVD and tested it on a consumer deck???

Thankyou for mentioning that the Superdrive doesn't write data. I was planning to get one. I use a Medea hard drive (75G raid). It's fabulous. Half the price of Digi, and higher data rate. I've even run dual stream Avid media at AVR77. I use AIT 2 tape for backup (50G per tape uncompressed). Rock solid. I got both from Cybernetics. The 9600 I bought a year ago came with an Adaptec 2940 SCSI card, which works fine.
