Default Loaded MIDI files locked at max level

If I download a MIDI file from off the net it loads nicely into PTLE (all rather fun playing Along the watchtower on vibes!) but the levels are locked at max.

How do I fix this?

Karel ummm... delete the CC 7 event in that tracks MIDI Event List. (Start double-click Track Name).

That worked!

So why did the author write in an event that set the level at 127? Maybe it's a software bug.

OK, next question. How do I record changes in level during the running of a MIDI track? Do I enable record and just do it?

set the automation mode to write, touch or latch and move the fader as the song plays.

No it's not a bug, it's just the way the host sequencer created it.

For MIDI, yes, you'd enable MIDI Merge and record your pass.

Is this for computer-based devices or external? Multi-Sampled?

If you know the original this might amuse you. it's nothing serious, just an exercise to get the hang of using some of the MIDI capabilities and is in no way 'finished'. But I do so like Steinberg's Grand 2 - it's a monster, but what a sound!

Karel are you using Channel Volume or Velocity for dynamics? The latter is best for timbre.

I hear you. What exactly you picking up on?

p.s. any ideas on where it's worth going to learn more about the innards of MIDI? Or a good book? Cheers.

Would I be correct in saying that that performance is a SMF (Standard MIDI File)?

I guess a point of origin needs establishing, that is to say, is the piece an emulation of realism?

My piano teacher always says, that a piece of interest is how it's played.

Humanization, if you will, is what your after and a good point of reference is to listen to a live recording of a piano performance, being conscious of performance directions and dynamics.

Does the performance start off quiet piano and slightly retarded (held back) ritenuto. Does the dynamics change through cadence and melody (a soft touch at the right time can sharpen a performance). Are there crescendos and diminuendos present, accelerandos and ritardantos, what about feel, lets say, is the first movement lacrimoso sad or scherzoso playful?

Semplice pieces can be turned to pieces of nobilmente with how it's played.

Ummm... book of interest, I'm currently reading The Guide to MIDI Orchestration it's also a great reference source.
