I upgraded yesterday, no problems at all.
I am using the Dark Skin file from Radioman - instead of the file from Avid.

I have been using Pro Tools since PT III - and that is a long time, and I have always been happy with it.

Installed and is working fine here. Avid now forces Windows users to uninstall before updating to a new version, starting with 2021.3. I did that and everything is running fine here.

Yes I realise that, Pro Tools sees it as requiring a licence at start up on the splash screen. Also in my iLok account it says the licence expired on 31/03/2021, however with a refresh date of 29/03/2021 with a 1 year subscription. Been using it for the past 2 years without any problem.

Hello,

@dominicperry,

Quote:
Since 2013 I've had PT firmware updates brick 6, count them 6, HDX cards, some of which I've had to pay to repair even though Avid's update bricked them.

This. This bothers me. Can you expand, or is that like re-living the trauma?
That's funny, reliving the trauma. Indeed. Ask my accountant about it, and my wasted weeks of gathering data and corresponding with Avid.

There have been various PT updates that needed firmware updates. As an engineer I appreciate that, I want a complex product like HDX improved. It's just DSP - and already quite old DSP when it was introduced - but there obviously have been various improvements developed to presumably make it work better. All good. However there have been MANY HDX cards from many folks that have been bricked by firmware updates. Many of our PT firmware updates have been fine but we've lost 6 cards over the years from certain updates. Each time it was the same result - after the firmware update DSP16 would not pass DigiTest and would not function on the card. Some of the times the card was unstable. The cards worked fine before the updates and failed during the updates. This was proven at the time to be the update, not the user procedure.

There were some attempts online from victims to codify this by serial number patterns that noted some patterns but didn't quite meet stringent statistical values to specifically say "this is the culprit".

< speculation mode >
The speculation from me and other victims online is that the original card design ran the TDM timing very close to it's limit and various cards' tolerances caused failures when pushed further. (that's TDM as in DSP time-division-multiplexing, a generic term).
I also suspect that's why the increased HDX voice count never went through - there would be too many cards that would fail. I'm good with that based on our history.
< /speculation mode >

Some of those cards I've had to pay to be repaired which means they send me a replacement card in exchange for the bad one and a lot of money. Others Avid has replaced after many weeks of correspondence and documentation. It's a painful process, we're without cards for a couple of months, and when I've had to pay it's very expensive for something that has nothing to do with me or normal out-of-warranty failure modes, it was the firmware update. And note - for past firmware updates the pcie slot must stay powered on during a warm reboot, and on a Mac with the cards in an expansion chassis there's no way to keep the slot powered during a reboot. We've figured out how but it's yet another inconvenience.

I'm still smiling at your "reliving the trauma" comment. Cost of doing business I suppose but consumers need to not have to pay for manufacturer-caused damage. When I do the next set of updates, whenever that is, I will record video of the entire, long, process to prove the update caused it, just in case.

Good luck,
Hugh

I'm reasonably disgusted that Avid can charge a repair fee for a card that was broken by one of their own firmware upgrades, especially as the firmware upgrade is needed to support the software, which you are also paying handsomely for. But their continuous sharp practice doesn't seem to be costing them enough users yet to be worth them changing. Whenever it does happen, it will be like the fall of an empire - no coming back.

Dominic

I utilized Avid Link to update to 2021.3.1, just as I have since purchasing Pro Tools several years ago. I have never had any issues with Avid Link.

Installed no issues. I always download and never use that Avid Link for installs.

I did notice that there was an immediate update for Avid Link also before I updated.
