er????

If you were to record at half speed, when you come to playback it will play twice as fast - think slow motion film :

film speed = 24fps, capture at 75fps and playback at 24fps = motion slowed by 3X.

capture at 75fps and playback at 75fps = normal motion.

capture at 12fps (half speed) and playback at 24fps = motion sped up by 2X.

Your best options are to either:

1. Use the timeshift plugin in the Varispeed mode.

2. Use Elastic Audio in the Varispeed mode.

3. Import the file into a sampler and trigger it at half speed.

4. Change the file header and import without SRC.

Hope that helps.

Carl, you're right about half-speed recording of material coming in through the converters. But the suggestion was made with respect to material that was already recorded. The person who suggested doing it that way obviously hadn't thought it through, and clearly hadn't tried it himself, because it doesn't work, as Ben pointed out. x/2*2=x.

That's ok, I understood that,

which is what I was getting at when I said:

capture at 75fps and playback at 75fps = normal motion.

I probably should have added:

capture at 12fps (half speed) and playback at 12fps (half speed) = normal motion.

Just to hammer the point home

Actually, that reminds me of a technique that Walter Murch developed.

As this problem shows with regard to bussing and bouncing internally, if you play something at half speed and record it at half speed, when you play it back at normal speed it obviously plays at normal speed.

What Walter Murch did was play a 7.5 IPS tape at 15 IPS over speakers in a gymnasium, and record it onto another machine running at 15 IPS.

When you play the tape back at 7.5 IPS the original signal is at its original pitch, but the "space" of the gymnasium has doubled in size.

Cool huh!

Very cool idea. In the digital realm, you'd need to capture at double your target sample rate, or you'd lose your top octave.

Of course. Then it plays back an octave higher in pitch and twice the speed of the source. Instant chipmunks. You might get some aliasing artifacts, though. Unless the sampling filter drops an octave on half-speed record, which seems unlikely, it would be capturing frequencies that couldn't be represented by the system on normal speed reproduction. It might be wise to feed the source through a steep 10 kHz low pass filter on the way in to clean that up.

Just hit Shift+Command+Spacebar. Try it.

?? Are we talking about the same thing? It should be obvious that it's not possible to record new material while bouncing down a mix.
