Default Media Comp’ to PT : volume loss

Hi there,
I’ve done this a thousand times but today, when opening an AAF exported from Media Comp’(2018) in PT (HD 12.7), volumes don’t show up (of course, the option was checked in the import session data window).
Clip gains are preserved but all volumes are lost (all at 0dB).

I’ve already sent the AAF to different persons with different versions of PT (including PT 2018) ans it didn’t work either.

Any idea what could be going wrong in media comp?
Anyone with a similar experience?
Thanks!
Mat

I haven't had that one, but my next move (if you haven't done it already) would be asking whoever made the AAF about it. Perhaps it was an option they didn't check?

You could also download Reason (free) and see if it opens up the same way in Fairlight. I haven't tried this, but I gather it has that capability, and could output a new AAF if everything comes up with volume there. I would be surprised if it comes up differently, but it might be worth a try.

The AAF was made by the editor’s assistant as always with feature films.
She says she has exported it as usual and doesn’t understand why it’s not working...
I’ve asked her to look into it tomorrow, we’ll try different settings.

I don’t really understand what Reason and Fairlight have in common....?...

Blackmagic bought the remnants of Fairlight.

Is it possible all the volume automation was converted to clip gain?

Apologies, Fairlight is in Resolve, not Reason.

OK, thanks, I do have (and use) Resolve (free version). I didn't know it could open AAF files. I'll check that.

Regarding volume, part of the sounds were treated using clip gain (added sounds) and the rest (multi-tracks from the shooting) using volume.
Don't ask me why....

There's no use trying to understand editors' workflows, IMHO.

Because just like in PT clip gain and volume curves do different things. In the AVID you have to use volume curves to create well...volume curves. Clip volumes are static.

But I receive AAF with both types all the time and didn't notice anything getting lost. Which version of MC is this? Would be good to know if this is a new bug.

Frank.

As an editor...

I mostly use clip gain to set levels (maybe adding a dissolve to transition) - e.g. for dialogue, music etc. I use volume where I ride the levels (automation - which is not available for clip gain in MC) and occasionally where I want to keyframe (but add edit and dissolve is much quicker).

Generally you'd probably want to ignore my volume automation (as you'll probably redo the dipping, plus may have deliverable requirements that mean you'd need to redo it) but I'd generally advise you to finesse my clip gain (as that should be pretty close to matching & be correct levels).

In PPro there's several places to adjust gain - all bets are off here!

To answer your original question - maybe get the assistant to import the AAF to MC and see if they see volume automation there?

EDIT:
I've just tried it with MC 2018.7 to latest PT on my laptop & it all seems to come across OK. The only thing they *may* have used would be the 'live' gain adjustments - I've never used those, don't see any point to them (they are like an output gain per timeline track in MC - there's no automation on them)
