Default Pro Tools 10 HD Native Memory Requirement ... More is Better?

It's looking like I will soon be moving to PT 10 HD Native.

My 8 core Mac Pro currently has 6 GB of memory.

Would increasing the memory yield improved performance for the native card?

If so ... is there an optimum memory size?

It will hold up to 32 GB, but is that overkill?

Thanks ...

Hi,

I've got 6 and its not enough! i'll be getting another 8 which should be plenty and enable me to assign 8-10 to the timeline cache and still have at least 4 gig left for the OS.

Depending on what computer you have, ram is cheap for the new mac pro's. if you have an harpertown like then ram is still quite expensive.

At 24 bit/48 kHz, a 5 minute song, where 100 mono tracks plays all the time, a 4 GB cache would be enough. Just sayin'.

Protools stills a 32 bit application so as far as I understand it will use a max of 4 gigs of ram except if version 10 has a mechanism that allow the 32bits application to use more ram but this is not something I've heard of.

2 gigs of ram should be enough imho for the os to run without a hiccup in the background.

but he has a Native card so he can use the Extended Disk Cache so more is better
total RAM -3GB for PT and up to 12 for EDC I think

Perhaps 16 GB would be a nice number?

I've read where it's best to have matching memory sticks. So, I guess that means pulling out the current 6 GB and installing new 16 GB sticks.

Provided you make no edits at all.

I have 4 minute songs with way less than 100 tracks and the session is nearly 4GB by itself. Plus, my session are all now in 32 bit rather than 24. (which means 1/3 larger)

If you're on HD, I'd say 8GB of RAM minimum if you really want to be able to take advantage of disk cache.

Correct. RAM does not like to be mixed and matched, and the bottleneck will always be based on the slowest chip. Plus, modern computers tend to take advantage of pairs or 3s in terms of performance.

Also if your using VEpro or another app that's using RAM at the same time you might want to take that into account.

Hi there,

I've 16GB RAM with my Mac Pro/PT10HD Native setup and all is good. The mac had 12 when I got it, but figured an even number of chips was better (4 x 4gb) I've come from a HD3 Accel on G5 rig and am very pleasantly surprised! Check out UAD2 cards for some extra plugin fun ;-) Oh, running Lion 10.7.2. No problems so far.
