Default Unbelievable track count on IDE drives?

I was informed by a fellow hard disk editor friend of mine that he has seen the Paris system play back 96 tracks and record 32 all at the same time on an IDE drive. I dont really believe this but what if it is true? Ive got my 15k ultra wide to record all 64 at once in Pro Tools. Any comments?

It sounds like somebody was pulling your leg. Even a SCSI Ultra wide can’t do that. And Firewire doesn’t even come close to SCSI spec wise! I’d love to hear more about this.

Doesn't Paris employ a sort of submixing system to realize it's track count?

I find it kind of funny how so many people with host based editors are always claiming to get 100's of tracks playing ack at once with a 7200 rpm drive. Yet, no one I know personally can get close to this. Makes me wonder...

Using PT Mixplus I'm running 48 tracks on a single internal IDE HD in my G4. It works flawless and it seems that i could do even more, i have to try

I can play 64 24bit/44.1kHz audio tracks off of the internal HD of my Dual G4-450. I do this with Logic, Cubase, and a MOTU 1224. If you're in NYC, I'll be happy to show you.

I have G3/266DT with MixPlus. I've replaced 4G system drive with 45G IBM 7200RPM, partitioned it to 5 and 40G and... tried to record on that 40G partition. I was thinking about 40G partition as temporary backup or for bounces - but it works well with sessions as well I work with 16 files (I know, I know) and I'm able to get full 64 tracks with medium density editing (live drums - you know that, and vocals without a problem. Now my 18G SCSI ultrawide is waiting and IDE is spinning

Streaming 20 or more straight tracks (Minimum edits) is no big deal.
But try heavy editing on all the tracks and then try streaming them. Thats a much bigger deal. Thats when you will feel the diffrence. Lots of small files. Much more taxing than 20 or 30 continuous files.

I once got a "thank you" call from a programmer, to whom I reluctantly rented a G3/300 beige tower running Cubase VST4.1
She said that she was pulling 80 audio tracks off the internal Mac drive??!!
She was, however, working with the redoubtable Bezz, from Happy Mondays....so...it coulda been the magic mushrooms and Carlesberg Special kicking in!!!

I get 128 tracks in Paris Pro 3.0 on a G3 with one of those drives (anyone like a screen shot?) RUNNING MILLIONS of colors WITH a QUICKTIME MOVIE!

32 HEAVY & DENSE 24 bit tracks running Logic 4.7 on a PT D24 System (2 DSP Farms) on the G4 using another of those Ultra DMA ATA100 IDE Maxtors. RUNNING MILLIONS of colors WITH a QUICKTIME MOVIE!

AND…

32, 24 bit tracks (not as heavy edit densities) on my G3 - NATIVE running Logic 4.7 using yet another of those Ultra DMA ATA100 IDE Maxtors. RUNNING MILLIONS of colors WITH a QUICKTIME MOVIE!

The new "Ultra" UDMA ATA100 EIDE drives have replaced my Ultrawide SCSI III drives and I've never looked back. And all along I always equated IDE = CHEAP PC - SLOW - JUNK.
My, my - have things changed!

When we got another G4 in the summer it came with a Maxtor Diamondmax Drive (40 Gig, 2meg buffer) ATA100.
So we ran some Logic (w PT24 hardware) sessions with LOTS of x fade's and deep edit densities and plugs and the thing ran & ran & RAN. NO –6041 or DAE -9062 errors about drives to slow. NOT ONCE! Did I mention 128 tracks running Paris?

We pushed it for my next heavy mix deadline and became so convinced of it's performance that we removed all the Adaptec SCSI cards & Drives from the G3’s & G4’s.

We now have ALL ATA100 (Maxtor Diamondmax) and NO SCSI cards or drives at all. Ready to replace the damned raid (Seagate Cheetah’s that keep frying) with a Max Attach Raid system (no I don’t work for Maxtor either).

We’ve done library and system design for Digi/Emu/Akai/Roland/Q-Up and others for over 15 years . We also do composition/sound design/foley/V.O. for animation, film and broadcast and have VERY SERIOUS deadlines to meet. We test very intensively, so when we pull 9 UW SCSI III drives and put in 6 Maxtor UDMA -100's (& one 66) we HAVE to be ABSOLUTELY sure that things will work!

Think about that - 128 tracks w/ 1 system alone (Paris Pro) w/ 680 GIGABYTES in just one post room. And you can get like 40-60 gigs for @ $275.00!

Ooops - forgot - alot of you folks posting here could be our competition !!

NEVER MIND - keep using what you've been using.
