two track reel to reel
I was considering looking for a 1/4" reel to reel machine for doing some analog recording before editing in the 001.
Is anyone tracking to tape in here. If so, where did you find the machine. I knew a guy who had two of them (I think that they were TEACS). I am having a little difficulty locating one. ufo |

Re: two track reel to reel
if you are buying a 1/4" analog machine just to "warm up" your tracks, i would suggest getting tube preamps instead and recording straight into the digi 001. I havent used them but some people on the DUC are using the ART tube pre's and love them. they are cheap, too.
the tape will add hiss and with 1/4" tape you will get crosstalk when you put a lot of tracks on it. ie, when you record 8 tracks on a 1/4" tape each individual track is REAL small. when you put 16 tracks on a 1/4 inch tape, obviously the tracks are even smaller. so if a track is hot- such as the kick or snare, it often will bleed into the track next to it. 1/4" tape is small, its only twice the size of what they use it for cassettes. but if you really want a tape machine is sell you mine. =) I have a tascam for sale- 1" tape- 16 track- 30ips.

The difference being that cassettes use half of it for the other side, multitracks don´t have "another side". I second the opinion on getting a tube preamp. However, you might consider a tape deck for your master mixes though, as this would "warm up" your mixes considerably. Keep in mind that this would also decrease your signal-to-noise ratio. |
