Default Adding 8 more in & outs to Digi 001

I haven't heard of anyone doing this yey so I thought i'd share. The Alesis AI-3 ($400) is a great way to add 8 more 24 bit ins and outs to your Digi 001 system. Recording drums is something I do a lot and connecting my Mackie 1604 direct outs to the AI-3 make repatching and micing in general easier. Have fun!

You are correct in the 20/24 bit confusion. Even the so called experts at the local music superstore were unaware that the AI-3 is now 24 bit. The conversion sounds great. Try it out. It really expands the possibilities.

sebman, How do you get 8 inputs from your mixer to the Alesis? That Mackie doesn't have seperate outs right? Are you taking a two track mix (main outs) of the drums? Please explain.
Thanks

the Mackie 1604 has direct outs.

also check out Presonus'DIGIMAX.
8 preamps to optical out.
more money, but very groovy.

IMHO,

The best way to get 8 ins and outs is to buy a MOTU 2408. The MOTU can act as a "audio thru box", IE:

You can route the analog ins OR the TDIF ins to one of the ADAT Outs via CueMIX, then connect the ADAT Out to your Digi001 optical In. This will give you an additional 8 inputs.

You can also route the analog and TDIF Outs to an ADAT In, giving you 8 outs as well.

The bonuses are:

1. The A/D converters on the 2408 MKII are noticably better than the Digi001 IMO.

2. You have a second audio interface to use with Peak (or other audio program) while running ProTool LE SIMULTANEOUSLY.

3. You can interface Tascam units (DA-38, DA-88, etc.) with the Digi001, resolved to word clock.

At $899.99, it is an excellent (and inexpensive) alternative to buying a standalone A/D/A unit.

Regards,

Chuck

Just sharing a discovery. If anyone reading this does get an AI-3, just remember that it's sample rate is fixed at 48 and the default on the LE software is 44.1. If you don't change this setting in hardware file inside the setup menu, you will hear a very annoying sync crackling when you go into record.
Thought I'd share as I found out the hard way, and yes the presonus Digimax is cool.
