Default External Hard Drive For Backup Or Allocation

How do I make my laptop run on this external drive or is it just for back up as i have heard of stories where engineers record and the audio gets allocated towards that external drive? I mean can't the same be done for all processes?

I mean the drive has not arrived but when it does, I guess I will have to allocate to that disk from the set-up inside pro tools

Search "Disk Allocation" in the Pro Tools Reference Guide.

YES OR NO

http://www.amazon.com/Fantom-GreenDr...NTOM+HARDDRIVE

reason being that Darryl told me from the forums to stay away from drives that say "green" but. . . take a look and watch what happens

From the top of this and every DUC page:

Please post your message once only to the correct forum

Green drives are NOT good for recording. They have power saving features that work against audio needs(which needs a fast performance drive, not a "green" drive).

The purpose of using a second drive is that pro tools does a lot.
Because of this ,a single drive just cannot keep up with a session on a single drive so. Having a second drive allows your computer to run pro tools off your original cpu drive but also record your audio to the additional drive.
This is better because now your drives do not have to do nearly as much at the same time and you will be able to get more out of them .
It is all about efficiency and performance .
External drives are possibly the worst way but if your cpu doesn't have addition drive bays it is the only way.
Check out the specs on the drive . make sure it has the fastest read write times as possible,
What ports does your cpu have
